What is an ocular prosthesis?

An ocular prosthesis, commonly known as an artificial eye, is a custom-made device that restores the appearance of a missing or damaged eye. It is designed to fit securely within the eye socket, providing both cosmetic and functional benefits. While an ocular prosthesis does not restore vision, it helps improve facial aesthetics and can aid in psychological and emotional well-being.

How is an ocular prosthesis made?

Creating an ocular prosthesis is a detailed process that involves several steps. Initially, the ocularist takes a mold of your eye socket to ensure a perfect fit. The prosthesis is then crafted using medical-grade acrylic and hand-painted to match the color and texture of your natural eye. Once completed, the ocularist will ensure the prosthesis fits comfortably and moves naturally with your eyelids.

Is the process painful?

The process of creating and fitting an ocular prosthesis is generally painless. Molding the eye socket and fitting the prosthesis involves minimal discomfort. If you have any concerns during the procedure, feel free to let your ocularist know. Local anesthesia or topical numbing agents are sometimes used if needed to ensure your comfort during the fitting.

How long does it take to get a custom ocular prosthesis?

The creation of a custom ocular prosthesis usually takes between 2 to 3 weeks. During this time, we will work with you to ensure the prosthesis is shaped and painted to your specific needs. Follow-up appointments may be scheduled to ensure proper fit and alignment.

How do I care for my ocular prosthesis?

Proper care and cleaning of your ocular prosthesis are essential for maintaining its appearance and ensuring comfort. We recommend cleaning it daily with mild soap and warm water and drying it with a soft cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials. Additionally, it’s important to remove your prosthesis regularly to allow the eye socket to breathe.

How often will I need to replace my ocular prosthesis?

With proper care, an ocular prosthesis can last anywhere from 3 to 5 years. However, regular check-ups are important to ensure the fit and function remain optimal. Over time, changes in the shape of the eye socket or natural aging can necessitate adjustments or a new prosthesis.

Will my ocular prosthesis look natural?

Yes! We take great care in hand-painting and customizing each prosthesis to match the color, shape, and texture of your natural eye. Our goal is to ensure the most natural and aesthetically pleasing result, so you feel confident and comfortable.

Can I wear contact lenses with an ocular prosthesis?

It is generally not recommended to wear contact lenses over an ocular prosthesis as it could cause discomfort or potential damage. However, if you wear a prosthesis in one eye and still have vision in the other, you may be able to wear contact lenses in the functional eye. Be sure to discuss this with your ocularist during your consultation.

Is there an age limit for getting an ocular prosthesis?

No, there is no specific age limit for receiving an ocular prosthesis. Children, adults, and seniors can all benefit from a custom ocular prosthesis. In fact, the earlier a prosthesis is fitted for children, the better the development of facial features and aesthetics.

Will I need regular follow-up appointments?

After your initial fitting, follow-up appointments are necessary to ensure that the ocular prosthesis is still fitting correctly and functioning well. Typically, you will need a follow-up visit 1-2 weeks after your first fitting, and then annual check-ups are recommended. We will also schedule appointments if adjustments are needed.

Can I still wear makeup with my ocular prosthesis?

Yes, you can wear makeup with your ocular prosthesis. Just be sure to use gentle, non-abrasive makeup removers to avoid damaging the surface of the prosthesis. Avoid using any makeup directly on the prosthesis, but feel free to apply makeup around the eye area to enhance your appearance.

How much does an ocular prosthesis cost?

The cost of an ocular prosthesis can vary depending on factors such as the complexity of the fit, the materials used, and the level of customization. During your consultation, we will provide you with a detailed cost estimate, and we will work with you to explore any available payment or insurance options.

Can you help with the emotional aspects of wearing an ocular prosthesis?

Yes, we understand that losing an eye can be a life-changing experience. We are here not only to provide you with a prosthesis but also to support you emotionally throughout the process. If you feel that you need additional support, we can refer you to counseling services and support groups that specialize in ocular care.
